Resilience

2 January 2018 by Nicole Loeffen

Almost 2 years ago I felt of a horseback in full speed and my body offered insufficient resilience ... I broke my back. During the long and painful rehabilitation process I  discovered something very special about myself. My resilience helped me in a natural way to deal with this intense period, by coming back step by step using my positive realism. How I dealt with this was very common to me ... and according to people in my area, quite special. It is nice to discover that the development of personal leadership is not only my business, but also comes naturally from deep inside also when it’s about me.

Now, 2 operations and almost 2 years later, I look back on a turbulent period in which I now feel more powerful than ever ... partly because of the resilience of my mental self I dare to say.

I like to share 3 outcomes that make me happy and will be part of my future as well”

  • Thanks to a very special instructor I am able to work with horses again, since this was and is my passion. Not on the horseback but on the side this time…still working on intuition and feel totally connected with such a large and fast animal is so special.
  • Not only dreaming to travel more but simply started to realize this. Beside our regular summer holiday I visited Valencia with my parents and sister, London with our daughter, Monaco with our son and Rome with my husband. A good way to travel more and spend some quality time with my beloved ones. Will continue this…to other places.
  • And, especially enough, the temporary "being physically disabled" also brought me a lot businesswise.  A shift in activities took place to facilitating, coaching and developing programs, so there was no time for interim assignments any more. Working together with Mark McGregor around his Being on Mission philosophy is becoming more concrete and will be an important part of my future work.

Is this the ideal picture because of my strong mental resilience? Not jet, the reverse side of it in my case is that I always do TO much! So also 1 important challenge for next year (focus is effective!)…

Achieve more by doing a little bit less!

My inspiration when it comes to resilience:

It always runs differently, and that makes you vulnerable. The only thing you can do is go along. Like the grass, they trample you and you bend. Once they will move their feet and then you will reach to the sky again. Do not stay stiff upright like reed, then you will break. No resistance, you will lose. As the grass I will be! Resilient and it always comes up again. Elisabeth Cook, from “Coming Home” by Anna Enquist.
